Waste King reveals 12 amazing facts about recycling

Waste King, the specialist collections, clearance and recycling company, is urging everyone – from individuals to the largest corporations – to recycle as much of their waste as possible.

In an attempt to raise awareness of the scale on which we produce waste, Waste King has revealed 12 amazing waste-related facts:

  1. 1. We use over 6bn glass bottles and jars each year. It would take you over 3,500 years to sing ‘Six Billion Green Bottles’.
  2. 2. Every tonne of paper recycled saves 17 trees.
  3. 3. In just over a week, we produce enough rubbish to fill Wembley Stadium. Over half that waste could be recycled.
  4. 4. Every year in the UK, we use 13bn steel cans which, if you placed them end to end, would stretch to the moon – three times!
  5. 5. The energy saved from recycling one glass bottle is enough to power a light bulb for four hours.
  6. 6. Each day, we produce enough rubbish to fill Trafalgar Square to the height of Nelson’s Column.
  7. 7. Each year, a typical person gets through the contents of 90 drink cans, 70 food cans, 107 bottles and jars and 45kg of plastic.
  8. 8. On average, each person in England and Wales produces nearly 500kg of household waste in a year.
  9. 9. The UK produces more than 434m tonnes of waste every year – enough to fill 3.5m double-decker buses.

10. Recycling a single run of the Sunday New York Times would save 75,000 trees.

11. A modern glass bottle will take 4,000 years or more to decompose – and even longer if it’s part of a landfill site.

12. Each year, every person in the UK produces waste equivalent to the weight of five cars – and we only recycle 11% of it all.

Andy Cattigan, of Waste King, explained: “Recycling may be becoming ‘fashionable’ – but it’s none the worse for that. We produce far too much waste each year and recycle far too little of it.”

Waste King pledges to recycle as much as possible of every load of waste its staff clear from customers’ premises – and Waste King has taken its own advice by completely furnishing its offices with recycled products.

“It’s never too late to start recycling your rubbish – especially if it’s the sort of rubbish that the Council don’t take away,” Andy added. “Moreover, opting to recycle your waste through Waste King can usually work out cheaper than hiring a skip.”

Waste King publishes its pledges to environmentally friendly waste disposal

Waste King, the specialist collections, clearance and recycling company, has publicly pledged its commitment to recycle a substantial and significant percentage of all the waste it collects from its customers – thus avoiding using the landfill option wherever possible. Moreover, it has promised that all the waste it collects is disposed of in an environmentally friendly way.

In addition to these pledges, which are included on Waste King’s updated website (www.wasteking.co.uk), are the following promises:

  • We continuously improve our environmental performance by achieving agreed objectives with our staff – and measure their performance.
  • We reuse and recycle wherever possible.
  • We comply with all relevant legislation, including environmental and health and safety regulations.
  • Every year, hundreds of tons of waste and unwanted items will avoid landfill because of us.
  • We are networked with other well established organisations across the UK that re-use and recycle.
  • We will use commercial transfer stations with particularly high standards of safety and recycling levels.
  • We offer discounted rates for recyclables.

Waste King, which provides a wide range of waste collection and recycling services for both domestic and commercial clients including house clearances, office clearance, shop refurbishments, general rubbish removal, garden & garage clearance, wait & load and skip hire, focuses not only on providing an environmentally friendly service but also one which is friendly, efficient and cost-effective.

Formed, in 2007, by Glenn Currie and Andy Cattigan, who had experience in sales and IT respectively and were keen to ‘do something to help the environment’, Waste King aims to create a professional and environmentally responsible solution for homes and businesses by creating the environmentally friendly, ‘skip alternative’ solution to waste recycling.

“Using a skip could be a false economy,” pointed out Glenn Currie. In his view, there are eight factors to take into consideration when deciding whether to hire a skip or seek an alternative – such as Waste King:

  1. Skip hire is expensive. Using Waste King can save customers up to 50% on their waste removals budget.
  2. Skip hire can be a hassle – particularly finding a skip company which delivers and removes your skip at the time you want.
  3. Using a skip means getting a skip hire permit or a parking permit from the local council. Doing this costs time and money – and, of course, the permit only lasts for a week; so, if you need a permit for longer, you will have to go through the process of renewing it.
  4. With Waste King, there is no need for skip permits or a parking permit. This saves customers time and money – with no hidden costs – and the whole loading and removal process is faster.
  5. Skip hire is hard work: loading heavy items can cause injury and takes time.
  6. Waste King does all that hard work. All its costs include labour, congestion charges and permits. Its staff even sweeps up afterwards!
  7. You pay for the whole skip – even if it is half empty – but Waste King normally charges only according to the volume of waste it removes.
  8. You are only allowed up to an eight cubic yard skip on the road in residential areas yet Waste King’s recycling trucks are sized at 16 cubic yards – that’s double the room!

Waste King helps customers save money

Waste King, the specialist collections, clearance and recycling company, is helping its commercial customers to save hundreds of pounds by getting them not just to say ‘no’ to using skips for all their waste materials but also by encouraging them to separate their waste materials before collection by Waste King’s uniformed and licensed operatives.

Waste King’s Andy Cattigan explained: “We have introduced a ‘fast load’ service for all our customers.

“Basically, we allow two hours to completely fill one of our trucks with waste materials – that’s equivalent to 16 yards of waste. If our staff can load the materials in less than half the allocated labour allowance – for example, loading half a truck (eight yards) in only 30 minutes or less instead of the one hour ‘allowed’, our Fast Load rate applies and so we charge the customer a reduced rate.

“In other words, if the customer has pre-sorted the waste materials into various types of waste before our truck and staff turn up, then it makes it easier for our staff to do their job – and they can do it quicker too. In that case, it’s only fair that our customers should reap the benefit of their helpful work, via a reduced charge for the job.”

A number of Waste King’s customers have already benefited from this arrangement – among them Barclays Bank, the health and fitness club chain LA Fitness, and the East London based interior design company, City Interiors.

“City Interiors’ staff have been exceptionally helpful in planning and organising the various waste loads for us before we arrive,” Cattigan said.

For further details of Waste King’s ‘Fast Load Service’, contact Glenn Currie on 07761 577001 or email glenn.currie@wasteking.co.uk

Waste King becomes a preferred supplier to the David Lloyd Leisure Group

The waste collections and recycling specialist, Waste King, has become a preferred supplier in the UK to eight of the David Lloyd Leisure Group (DLL) sites. DLL operates 78 clubs in the UK as well as a further ten sites across Europe.

Jo Farren, operations manager of David Lloyd Sudbury Hill, commented: “Waste King provides a swift, efficient and thorough service. The Waste King team are polite and helpful, with the work carried out within days of order.

“The whole service of collection – with manpower included – costs our business less than a standard skip. So it’s a win-win situation for us.”

Waste King’s Glenn Currie explained: “Waste King’s uniformed and licensed staff are working with DLL Group operations managers, such as Jo, to remove waste materials from DLL’s clubs.

“This means that there are no skips on DLL Group’s premises. Moreover, DLL staff don’t have to lift or move heavy waste items.

“Our staff do all of that for them – and we are able to separate the waste into loads that can be recycled in an environmentally friendly way,” he said. “If the waste had just been put into skips, the contents would have had to go to landfill projects whereas, now that Waste King staff can separate it into discrete types of waste, each of these types of waste can be re-cycled, thus placing less stress on our environment.”

This news comes hard on the heels of Waste King’s work to help the well known health and fitness club, LA Fitness, refurbish some of its gyms in the London area while keeping the disposal of the waste materials created in the process as environmentally friendly and as cost effective as possible. LA Fitness’ multi-million pound project involved Waste King in not only collecting and recycling materials from the LA Fitness gyms but also working with site managers at the gyms to develop Site Waste Management Plans (SWMP).

According to Waste King’s Glenn Currie: “SWMPs are intended to help contractors manage site waste more effectively, reducing potential harm to the environment and human health.

“They help to manage and reduce the amount of waste produced by construction projects, which means less waste goes to landfill. Other environmental benefits of SWMPs include less damage to the local environment, less fly-tipping, lower energy use and greater use of recycled materials.”

This means that LA Fitness can account for how every piece of waste from this project has been dealt with.

Record month for Waste King

The waste collections and recycling specialist, Waste King, has reported a record month for its waste collection activities in October.

During the month, the company collected, among other things:

  • Over 11,000 kilogrammes of wood
  • Over 2,500 kilogrammes of cardboard
  • Nearly 5,200 kilogrammes of hardcore, in addition to
  • Nearly 50,000 kilogrammes of ‘general’ waste

“Roughly 80 per cent of all this waste came from commercial sources, while the rest came from the domestic market,” revealed Waste King’s Glenn Currie.

“It’s encouraging to see that more and more people – both in businesses and where their own homes are concerned – are becoming increasingly keen on disposing of their waste in the most ecologically efficient way,” he said.

“The more waste that can be segregated before collection, the less waste needs to go into the landfill sites which are beginning to cause concern for environmentalists and others who are concerned about the well-being of our environment and, ultimately, the planet,” he added.

This increased business activity – which has seen Waste King increase its revenue by seven per cent month on month this year – has prompted the company to enlarge its labour force to cope with the growth in demand for environmentally friendly waste collection, clearance and recycling.

Waste King takes its own advice – and re-uses office materials

The waste collections and recycling specialist, Waste King, has taken its own advice and has used recycled office equipment with which to kit out its Hemel Hempstead headquarters.

Everything from the office’s desks to its pens and staplers have been reclaimed and recycled from what has been thrown away in recent weeks by other offices – for example, as part of an office refurbishment.

Waste King’s Glenn Currie commented: “It is Waste King’s policy to recycle or re-use any of the waste products we collect, wherever this is possible. We believe that this is an environmentally friendly and responsible way to behave.

“We thought that we ought to take our own advice about recycling and re-using things, when it came to equipping our office – and, having done just that, we’re delighted with the result!”

Waste King: recyclers to the stars – and, sometimes, the stars themselves

The waste collections and recycling specialist, Waste King, has helped in the making of a new film – Re-Uniting the Rubins, a comedy drama about a completely dysfunctional Jewish family and starring Timothy Spall, Rhona Mitra, James Callis and Honor Blackman – by clearing up the various shooting locations after each day’s filming.

The film – which is being released in early 2010 – was shot a during the summer in South Africa, Elstree Film Studios and locations in and around London including The Fish Market at Canary Wharf, Radisson Hotel in Canary Wharf, the University of Harrow and Radlett Cricket and Rugby Clubs.

Waste King’s Glenn Currie explained: “Making the film involved a lot of people and they were moving to new locations regularly. When they moved location, it was important to clear the site where they had been completely – otherwise the film company could have been accused of fly tipping.

“The film company couldn’t leave any waste and, in any case, needed to concentrate on making the film,” he added. “So they were happy to call us in to ensure that what they didn’t need any more was recycled in a highly environmentally friendly way.”

“We were delighted with the efficient and reliable service we received from Waste King,” said Jonathan Weissler, owner of Balagan Productions, the Producer of ‘Re-Uniting the Rubins’, which is due for release early next year. “We are anxious to ensure that our operations are as environmentally and ecologically friendly as possible, especially in the light of the huge amount of waste a film set generates daily – and so we’re grateful to Waste King for the help and advice they gave us.”

But Waste King is also used to being in front of the cameras. In the summer, Waste King’s Andy Cattigan featured in a sketch which was televised on Big Brother’s Little Brother (BBLB).

The sketch, now available at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBKbb1qirCA, was filmed at a Transfer Waste station and re-enacted a scene from that week’s Big Brother programme.

BBLB is a magazine television programme that airs on Channel 4 and E4, running in conjunction with each series of Big Brother. It looks at Big Brother-related activities outside the House and features interviews with celebrities, journalists and friends and family of housemates and, sometimes, recently evicted housemates.
