Academics welcome new collaborative business relationships standard

Representatives from the UK’s higher education sector have welcomed the draft British Standard BS 11000 – on collaborative business relationships.

At a recent meeting in London, representatives from institutions including the University of Exeter Business School, the University of Bath, the University of Strathclyde, and Cranfield University agreed that the creation of BS 11000 was a major step forward which offers significant opportunities to support the implementation of more effective collaborative working for both the private and public sectors.

The standard is the brainchild of Partnership Sourcing Limited (PSL), a self-financing not-for-profit organisation which helps organisations of all sizes, in both the public and private sectors, to build and develop effective competitive business relationships based upon a collaborative approach.

Currently known as PAS 11000, the standard is the world’s first collaborative relationship standard and provides a multi-stage approach to help organisations work together. The framework enables an organisation of any size and sector to apply good partnering practice and manage valuable business relationships.

Discussing the creation of an MBA module developed around BS 11000 – since collaborative leadership will be a key skill for the future – the delegates agreed on the need for research to underpin the new standard – such as case studies focusing on the companies that had already adopted PAS 11000.

In addition, they considered establishing a BS 11000 Skills Forum, including both university and industry participants to facilitate knowledge transfer.

According to PSL’s Operations Director, David Hawkins, BS 11000 is due to be published at the end of October, with a formal launch of the standard at the House of Lords on 7th December.

Earlier this year, five leading companies in the defence, aviation and support services sectors become the first in the UK to be awarded PAS 11000 certification. EMCOR Group (UK), Lockheed Martin UK, NATS, Raytheon Systems Limited and VT Group worked closely with PSL to achieve PAS 11000 certification, awarded by BSI after they were audited in a pilot certification programme.

PSL reveals the latest theory and practice in partnering in education

Effective collaboration is the key to gaining sustainable competitive advantage – not just within the private sector but throughout the economy, including the education sector.

Demonstrating this was the aim of speakers at ‘Partnering in Education’ – Partnership Sourcing Limited (PSL)’s latest Executive Partnering Knowledge Network conference. The event, held at King’s College Cambridge, was sponsored by the PSL member company Toshiba.

In his keynote address, Barry Sheerman MP – who recently celebrated his 30th Anniversary as the Labour and Co-operative Member of Parliament for Huddersfield commented: “In the light of current economic conditions – signified by public sector spending cuts, including those in the education sector – we need to think of new ways of doing business. In particular, we need to be inventive if we are all to overcome the challenges ahead.”

Up until the change of Government, Barry Sheerman was Chairman of the House of Commons Parliamentary Select Committee for Children, Schools and Families and previously chair of the Parliamentary Select Committee for Education and Skills from 2001 to 2007. The approach he advocates includes building new partnerships because, he said: “partnerships are central to how we deliver high quality in education – and in other areas of our national life.”

“You can’t work in isolation any more – even at the highest level,” agreed Len Daniels, Toshiba’s Education and Public Sector Sales Manager, referring to the UK’s coalition Government. He went on to outline a number of trends in education in the 21st century, including:

  • Increasing emphasis on personalised learning
  • Universal home access to information, via the internet
  • The growth of virtual and social learning environments
  • There are now opportunities for learning anywhere at anytime – and for shared learning experiences – thanks to advancing technology

A further trend – explained by presentations from four pupils at Stretford High School in Manchester, who were introduced by the school’s Assistant Head Teacher, Daniel Stucke – is designating a number of pupils throughout the school as ‘digital leaders’. It is their job to not only help their fellow pupils to make the most of the learning opportunities afforded and enhanced by technology but also to coach their teachers in how to use technology in the classroom to its greatest educational advantage.

The technology theme continued with Phil Austin the Managing Director of Life Channel, who explained how bespoke TV programming in schools is helping pupils (and parents) to better understand the big issues affecting our lives, such as sustainability.

Amanda Fisher, General Manager of VT Education, commented that the key factors for successful partnering are a genuine alignment of vision and objectives for the parties in the partnership – particularly in terms of ethos, philosophy and values.

This theme was reinforced by Vicki Fagg the Principal of the College of North West London, recognised as an expert on the development of Further Education.

Later, during the panel discussion, a delegate from Raytheon Systems Ltd described Stretford High School’s digital leaders technique as ‘reverse mentoring’ and agreed that a similar system was in use at Raytheon. The consensus among both the panel and delegates was that this collaborative approach brings a large number of benefits which, for the best results, needs to be handled and managed professionally.

Big Lottery Fund is awarded for research to support self help groups in the UK

The Big Lottery Fund has announced a grant of £248,866 to support a joint research project to be conducted by Self Help Nottingham and the Universities of Anglia Ruskin and Nottingham designed to improve the support available for self help groups in the UK.

Self help groups are run for and by peers who are facing a similar social or health related condition. There is now considerable evidence that peer-led self help groups offer an effective means for improving health and social care outcomes for people.

The three year project entitled ‘Developing effective support for community based self help groups’ has just started. It is designed to produce evidence based guidelines that would be widely available to health and social care practitioners so that they can provide the best support for local self help groups.

The project will be managed by the Director of Self Help Nottingham, Sarah Collis, with research carried out under the supervision of Professor Carol Munn-Giddings at Anglia Ruskin University and Professor Mark Avis at the University of Nottingham.

Speaking on behalf of the Faculty of Health & Social Care at Anglia Ruskin University, Professor Munn-Giddings said: ‘The team at Anglia Ruskin University is delighted and excited to have been awarded this grant which recognises the importance that self help groups make to people’s social well-being and the role that community practitioners have to play in supporting their development.’

Melanie Boyce from Anglia Ruskin University and Sarah Chaudhary from The University of Nottingham will be researchers for the project.

The project is a qualitative participatory action research study conducted in four stages developed with self help group members.

Stage one will describe the characteristics of self help groups and identify key issues for their development and maintenance. Stage two will involve in-depth case studies with selected self help groups and professionals in order to identify the development needs of self help group members and the professionals who are in contact with them. Stage three will develop an evidence based good practice resource pack for professionals working with self help groups. Stage four will be devoted to dissemination and communication with health and social care practitioners and experts nationally. The main output, the evidence based guidelines, will be available via Self Help Nottingham.

Self help group members in the UK will benefit from the availability of appropriate guidance on building resilience in self help groups, community based practitioners in the voluntary and public sector will have access to resources to work with self help groups, and health and social care commissioners will have the research evidence to include appropriate support for self help in their plans.

Vera Todorov, chair of Trustees of Self Help Nottingham, said: ‘Very many people benefit from involvement in self help groups, and yet the contribution that self help activity makes to social well-being is often not well understood by health and social care professionals. I welcome this opportunity to bring together self help members and community practitioners to promote good practice in support of self help.’

Total Control Advanced Riding Clinic Launches Superadvanced Motorcycle Training in the UK

Total Control Advanced Riding Clinic Logo

The High Performance Street Riding School, Total Control Advanced Riding Clinic, has just made Superadvanced motorcycle training – devised by Lee Parks – available in the UK

Stratford upon Avon, UK – The Total Control Advanced Riding Clinic (Total Control ARC) in Stratford upon Avon has officially opened this week. The American champion rider, Lee Parks, created his unique take on motorcycle training in 1994. It is now well established in the USA and, after some test events, it is now available in the UK.
Simultaneously with the launch of the Total Control ARC, is the launch of its website at http://www.totalcontroltraining.co.uk

Superadvanced Motorcycle Training in progress
Superadvanced Motorcycle Training in progress

The term “Superadvanced” was specially coined to describe the type of training given at the clinic and to set it apart from what it is often confused with: “Advanced (or Enhanced) Riding”.

In the UK, Advanced Riding is where a policeman or a Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents instructor, or an Institute of Advanced Motorists instructor would take someone out onto the roads and show them how they can minimise hazards through using “The System”.

“This is not what we do,” explains Duncan Mackillop (Principal of Total Control in the UK) who delivers the Superadvanced motorcycle training itself. “What we teach here is fundamentally different to the methods taught in every other riding school in the country. They teach, essentially, about planning for and managing the hazards that you would encounter every day when out riding your bike.”

Although Total Control does cover how riders interact with the environment, especially the management of corners, it also covers, in much greater depth, how the rider and machine interact. It is very difficult to cover these elements in depth out on the road as the environment is ever changing and the feedback loop between rider and machine changes with the environment. Total Control provides a consistent environment in the form of its training ground, so that the feedback between rider and bike is more obvious. This feedback that results from the consistent environment, is at the heart of the practical element of Total Control.

Another major difference is that, with “The System”, riders have little opportunity to discover how their mental state has such a profound effect on their riding. The Total Control Clinics give a series of short lectures between the practical exercises, that show how mental states such as fear, can be detrimental to the safe conduct of their ride due to their effect upon certain factors such as throttle control, body position and traction. The lectures also give a rider a much better understanding of how the inputs they make to the bike affect their ability to remain in control.

“As we say at the beginning of the clinic, Total Control teaches you the “real stuff” that you just can’t learn in school. i.e. you learn a lot from normal Advanced Riding schools, but with Total Control, you begin to understand the really important things that simply cannot be learnt out on the road. If “The System” is represented by Advanced training, then Total Control is represented by Superadvanced training, as it expands upon what you have already learned from Advanced training,” adds Duncan.

Total Control ARC recommends that every rider get hold of a copy of Total Control: High-Performance Street Riding Techniques by Lee Parks, which is the second-biggest selling motorcycle-riding self-help book in the US, second only to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s Guide To Motorcycling Excellence, (the American version of the UK’s Roadcraft – The Police Riders Guide to Better motorcycling). The book can be ordered online through Total Control ARC’s website http://www.totalcontroltraining.co.uk.

About Total Control ARC
The Total Control ARC has a solution for those experienced riders who want to be able to further enhance their skills in a controlled environment with expert instruction. The Total Control System was devised by motorcycle championship-winner and Chief instructor, Lee Parks, who had been racing for 25 years. He then spent five years as the editor and chief test rider of Motorcycle Consumer News where he road tested every new street motorcycle available in the U.S. and became one of the top performance-testing journalists in the world. Lee’s staff of personally-trained instructors make Total Control available all over the U.S. and Europe. In the UK, Total Control Superadvanced Riding Clinics are delivered by Duncan MacKillop and Penny Glover, both of whom have a wealth of experience in Superadvanced rider training.
