Chicago, January 29, 2010 (word count: 571)
The 2010 World CTL Conference, the main worldwide meeting on the production of fuels, natural gas and chemical products from coal and biomass, will be held in Beijing from April 13 to 15. Coal-To-Liquids (CTL) and other conversion processes are opening up huge strategic prospects. They also represent essential issues in terms of technology, sustainable development and competitiveness. These topics will be at the heart of discussions between the research scientists, politicians and industrialists expected at the conference, which will be followed by a tour of three conversion plants in Inner Mongolia.

Jamg, Jiutai, Lu’an, Shenhua, Yitai – these latest conversion units are all located in China, and some of them represent world firsts. World CTL has invited their managers to share practical information about them. The program, to which energy leaders and conversion specialists will also be contributing, is available on www.world-ctl.com.

At the close of the discussions, the 2010 World CTL Award will be presented to Mr. Zhang Jiming, vice president of Shenhua Liquefaction, for the contribution his work on direct conversion has made to the knowledge and development of CTL.

After three days of conferences, April 16 will be devoted to touring three plants in Inner Mongolia, an hour and a half by plane from Beijing: Shenhua’s direct coal liquefaction plant, Yitai’s indirect coal liquefaction plant and Jiutai’s plant for methanol and DME production from coal.

“After [previous editions in] Paris and Washington, we are delighted to be organizing the 2010 World CTL in Beijing and Inner Mongolia, since China is the country undergoing the most rapid development in our industry. Industrialists and research scientists are now showing us that they support this choice,” says Serge Périneau, president of the World CTL 2010 Conference.

Coal liquefaction is a subject of growing interest today. 30% of the diesel and petrol consumed in South Africa are now produced from coal. The U.S. Air Force is continuing its flight trials using this type of fuel, and will have tested its entire fleet by the end of 2011. The world leader in coal production, Shenhua, started up its first CTL unit in 2008, with a capacity of 20,000 barrels per day.

In strategic terms, reducing energy dependence on crude oil and gas has become a priority, because these have limited reserves spread unevenly throughout the world, in contrast to coal and biomass, which can now be converted to liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons by current technologies. As these processes are still little applied, it is essential for research scientists and industrialists to share their experiences.

The use of coal, the most carbonaceous of fossil fuels, involves major environmental stakes through its very nature. The increasingly accurate assessment of greenhouse gas emissions makes it possible to compare several energy routes. It notably shows the benefits to the environment of coupling CTL with CCS (carbon capture and storage). New technological breakthroughs are being studied in terms of the environment, which will be discussed during the conference.

Because of their complexity, conversion processes necessitate huge investments. The profitability of projects will depend on their location and variations in the price of oil and coal.

Given the strategic, technological, environmental and economic issues at stake, everyone is aware that efficient solutions will be found by sharing points of view and making a success of partnerships, often on an international scale. The mission of the World CTL Conference is to foster these exchanges.

Chicago, January 29, 2010 (word count: 545)
With nearly €37 billion ($52 billion USD) in sales, and €2.4 billion  ($3.4 billion USD) in R&D spending, French aviation has long been a power player within the aerospace industry. Additionally, France’s aerospace subcontracting industry generates more than €10 billion in sales, provides jobs for 80,000 people and encompasses a broad range of specialized equipment manufacturing. However, given that 40 percent of Airbus A-380 components are produced in the United States, international collaboration is essential to the sector.

“France boasts a network of companies specializing in producing Europe’s leading aerospace equipment, thanks to the longstanding presence of Airbus and the recent creation of cooperative organizations, innovation clusters and alliances. This ability to pool expertise is a key factor in France’s appeal to foreign investors,” observes David Appia, Chairman and CEO of the Invest in France Agency.

Partnership Trends for Tomorrow’s Technology
Recent alliances forged between small to medium-sized companies (SMEs) in the aerospace subcontracting industry have resulted in a growing number of companies joining forces. At the most recent International Paris Air Show in Le Bourget, for example, SMEs such as Meca’Com, AeroTeam, Induxial and Ingéliance held a joint exhibition.

Technologies of the future are of vital importance to aerospace subcontracting. The aviation industry increasingly relies on composite materials, especially polymer materials used to develop new wing technologies for next-generation aircraft.  More companies are choosing to develop their latest technologies in France. The Japanese company Toray, for example, has opened Toray Films Europe, a new facility devoted to producing biaxially oriented polypropylene film previously manufactured in the United States. On October 1, 2009, the aerospace subcontractor Spirit AeroSystems, headquartered in the U.S., began constructing an assembly plant for composite components in Montoir-de-Bretagne, in the Loire-Atlantique département – an investment amounting to several tens of millions of euros.

Expanding Opportunities While Going Green
The sustainable development goals set for the air transportation sector under the Act of August 3, 2009 (“Grenelle I”), which specifies the measures to be implemented as a result of the French Environmental Round Table Talks (“Grenelle de l’environnement”), include reducing fuel consumption by 50% per passenger-kilometer, reducing carbon monoxide emissions by 80%, and halving noise pollution by the year 2020. The new technological challenges generated by these environmental requirements are expected to stimulate research and development.

Innovation Attracting Leaders from Around the Globe
Innovation clusters provide further advantages and make an important contribution towards aerospace research and development. 94,000 people, including 8,500 in research positions, work in Aerospace Valley (Aquitaine and Midi-Pyrénées regions) which is home to a large number of major international companies including EADS, Freescale Semiconductors, Goodrich, Honeywell, Rockwell Collins and Siemens. Companies in the ASTech Paris Région cluster (Ile-de-France) employ 100,000 people, accounting for the majority of R&D jobs in the French aerospace industry, and count major players among their number such as Dassault Aviation, Safran and Astrium. 35,000 people, 30% of whom are in research positions, work in the Pégase cluster (Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur region), which brings together more than 250 aerospace companies.

Low-Run High-Quality Web-Based Printing Service Beanprint.com Goes Live

.

Beanprint logo Low Run High Quality Web Based Printing Service Beanprint.com Goes Live
Beanprint.com offers complete high-end printing with no minimum order plus complete fulfillment, taking the risk out of charity print runs – at substantially reduced prices

Redditch, Worcestershire – The former CTO and co-founder of the business directory Scoot.com, Chris Chedgzoy, has launched his latest venture: Beanprint.com.

The startup web-based business, which went live earlier this month, integrates the internet with the latest digital printing press technology, allowing users themselves to design their promotional material online. This unique approach makes very low quantity print runs possible whilst achieving high-end production results at substantially reduced costs. The service includes complete fulfillment from order to delivery.

“During the last 6 months of 2009, we test ran the system, producing calendars for the glamour industry and for charities – and we proved that our customers were able to order their products as they sold them one-for-one, so they never needed to hold stock,” Chris explained. “We know that fund-raising efforts of many charities fail because so much money ends up being lost in unsold stock of calendars, for example, where large numbers have to be ordered to keep the unit price down or to just meet the printer’s minimum order requirements.”

Chris continues: “We then decided to go one step further and to make it even easier: we decided to offer complete fulfillment as well. So our customer never sees it – we ship out the order on our customer’s behalf.”

Beanprint’s efficient and complete end-to-end service at very low operational costs (that is even able to offer same-day turn around) has been made possible by the company’s own unique and bespoke web-to-print interface which it developed in house. It allows the whole process from order to dispatch to be seamless whilst keeping production staffing costs to a minimum.

The company has many exciting plans in the pipeline including an affiliate scheme and new products as well as an aggressive marketing campaign, all to be announced soon.

About Beanprint

Beanprint specialises in short-run high quality colour printing services offering Business Cards, Leaflets, Shop Signs, Standard Signs, Car Signs, Greeting Cards, Calendars, Model Cards, Post Cards and T-Shirts. From a one-off to a full production run, we utilise the very best of the latest digital printing press technology to enable us to offer the high quality products only traditionally found in large production. We can take the guesswork out of charity calendars by offering fulfillment of your production; we simply produce your calendars as your orders come in, including handling the shipping. No minimum order requirements, so you are not left with calendars you can’t sell after your promotion period.

Chicago, January 28, 2010 (word count: 592)
Drawn directly from its longstanding expertise in high-voltage supply components and systems, SDS is releasing new specialized power supply units fitted to dedicated applications such as microchannel plates, streak cameras, Pockels cells, APDs, CCD intensifiers, mass spectrometry detectors. In addition, two benchtops and/or portable instruments are now available: an HV power supply for multipurpose detectors and a γ-radiameter.

New power supplies:

GIPO series is basically composed of an adjustable high voltage DC-DC converter with a high speed, high-voltage switch. It can be instrumented or not, on demand. Stability of the high-voltage power supply integrated in the module is very high (10ppm/°C). This device is able to switch 5.5kV in less than 3ns. Pulse width, voltage and repetition rates can be adjusted by the user.

SDS can also provide a High Voltage Linear Ramp Generator typically 0 → 1500 V in 1µs to 1ms, these two parameters are fully adjustable by the user. The main application is streak camera power supply as new or retrofit electronics.

MCP series consists in a minimum sized high-voltage power supply unit for low-impedance microchannel plates with resistive anode readout and exceptional stability better than 25ppm/°C over a -55°C/95°C range. The switching of the cathode power supply is controlled by the anode current adjustable discriminator.

Benchtop models:

LBT series (more than 52 standard products) presents AC-DC benchtop power supplies, low power 0.1W to 6W, high voltage 0-100V to 0-8000V. Negative or positive polarity is achievable depending on the model with a typical residual ripple <0.05%. Local or remote control is available via RS232, USB or field bus.

GAM detector is a low-cost, transportable / portable gamma (γ) rays radiameter with a PC-USB connection, integrating a GM tube selected for its very large energy range. An alarm mode is currently provided for fast activity change in the detection of radioactive material in the appropriate energy range. An original filtering algorithm allows a reliable detection even for low activities, so in harsh statistical conditions.

SDS will be exhibiting at PITTCON 2010 from March 1 to 4 in Orlando, Fla., on the French Pavilion at booth 3409.

About SDS:
Founded in France in 1985, Systems Development & Solutions (SDS) is France’s leading manufacturer of DC-DC high-voltage converters, AC-DC high-voltage power supplies, and associated remote command and control boards. SDS’ standard products are used in varying applications that include light detection with PMTs and APDs, CCD intensifiers, mass spectrometry detection with MCP, beam deviation and radiation detectors. SDS also develops standalone modules that deliver rapid high voltage pulses and ramps when a voltage of several kV must be commutated or ramped in a very short time (ns to ms range). These modules are used in a broad range of applications: Q-Switching with Pockels cells, electron microscopes and streak cameras.  They are available in configurations including racks, benchtops, non-instrumented blocks. When remote mode operation is needed, the equipment designed and manufactured by SDS can incorporate RS232/RS485 serial interfaces or a GPIB link supporting the SCPI command protocol, or be fitted with field bus adaptors for the most acknowledged protocols.

SDS is an OEM solution provider with the world’s instrumentation leading companies. SDS is also a  constant supplier for a large number of research centers including the French Atomic Energy Commission (Commissariat à l’énergie atomique), the technological research organization Mega Joule Laser from Cesta, the CERN (European Centre for Nuclear Research), the Max-Planck Institut für Physik, the CESR (Centre for Space Research on Radiation), the CETP (Terrestrial and Planetary Environment Research Centre), the IN2P3 (National Institute for Nuclear and Particle Physics), among many others.

gtslearning and Toolwire Announce Groundbreaking Hands-on Experiential Learning Solutions for CompTIA Certification

Innovative experiential learning solutions announced by industry leaders demonstrates best practices in CompTIA A+ 2009 Edition skills delivery

gtslearning, the leading supplier of CompTIA-approved learning content, and Toolwire, a world-leader in experiential learning solutions for IT and the 2009 IITT Innovation in Training Services Gold Award Winner, announced a new training solution today for CompTIA A+ 2009 Edition.  This new collaborative learning solution combines the widely lauded strength of gtslearning content and the award-winning hands-on power of Toolwire LiveLabs and “Day-in-the-Life” Interactive Scenarios.

The CompTIA A+ certification is the industry standard for computer support professionals and has long been acknowledged as a primary catalyst for careers in Information Technology.   The vendor-neutral certification has been designed to prove competence in a broad range of computer support skills, including installation, preventative maintenance, networking, security, and troubleshooting.  In addition, certified technicians must prove that they command the necessary customer service and communication skills to work with clients in today’s modern, highly connected world.

The announcement took place today, at Learning Technologies, and Matthew Poyiadgi, Vice President EMEA for CompTIA said: “Bringing together two of the IT industry’s most innovative learning leaders is a significant vote of confidence in the latest version of CompTIA A+.  We look forward to implementing these experiential learning solutions and providing certification candidates with first-class preparation, no matter what challenges of time and distance they may be confronted with.”

This latest CompTIA A+ certification, 2009 Edition, requires candidates to prepare for, and pass, two exams: CompTIA A+ Essentials and CompTIA A+ Practical Application. CompTIA A+ Essentials measures the necessary competencies of an entry-level IT professional with hundreds of hours of hands-on experience in the field.  CompTIA A+ Practical Application is an extension of the knowledge learned in Essentials, with more of a “hands-on” orientation focused on troubleshooting scenarios in which specific tools must be applied to resolve “real-life” problems.

gtslearning and Toolwire have joined to co-create compelling CompTIA A+ courseware featuring real-world virtual labs and scenarios for Essentials and Practical Application.  These Interactive Scenarios bring the learning to life with several weeks in a “technology apprenticeship” with real equipment, operating systems, and applications – all delivered anytime, anywhere via a web-enabled browser.

“We are delighted that Toolwire has partnered with gtslearning to create a unique CompTIA A+ learning solution that will have strong appeal to education centres around the world,” said Robin Adda, gtslearning’s Managing Director. “Toolwire is recognised as a leading provider of online experiential learning and combining Toolwire’s purpose-built virtual labs with gtslearning’s award-winning CompTIA-approved curriculum enables us to offer a ‘best of breed’ blended learning solution to meet changing demands in the CompTIA education market.”

These unique Interactive Scenarios are designed around an IT Technician’s roles and help students translate realistic requests from co-workers and customers (via phone, email, meetings and site visits) into viable IT solutions. For example, in a customer service Scenario involving viruses, the student is guided through the process of gathering all relevant data, identifying the virus, and then inoculating it in a risk-free, insulated hands-on virtual data centre.

This breakthrough blended learning solution embraces the latest technologies to provide not only individuals with a great learning resource, but also instructors and lecturers with a flexible, scalable, anytime, anywhere, solution to power their online IT programs so they can focus on what they do best: educating their students.

“We are all being challenged daily to rapidly and profoundly change our approach and attitudes towards learning, and embrace innovative solutions in order to remain competitive in the fast-changing global economy,” said John Valencia, CEO and President of Toolwire. “We look forward to ensuring the success of future CompTIA A+ certification candidates through their use of these combined world class technologies.”

IC School promotes exercise with the Walk on Wednesday program

The International Community School (or ICS for short), one of the most acclaimed international school London has to offer, has put its Walk on Wednesday program to work involving all of their Primary Years students. This new health promoting initiative works as follows: the school buses drop the students off at the top of Regent Park, the students are then joined by a group of ICS teachers and walk together to school.

This activity will be part of the ICS School Travel Plan which is a joint effort between the institution and Transport to London. The plan has the goal of encouraging more students to engage in regular walks and exercise all year long. The Walk on Wednesday initiative is also helping to alleviate the environmental impact of transportation for a crowded city such as London by reducing the CO2 emissions from public and private transportation.

The ICS is a renowned independent school London area that makes a point about working towards the promotion of a healthier life style and educating the children on the many benefits of regular physical activity.

A Pressing Need

Due to demographic studies conducted recently we can now see the true decline in physical activity on the younger population. Only half of children between the ages of 11 and 16 years walk regularly and most of them for only about 10 minutes per day. On average, children are walking far less today than they did 5 or 10 years ago. At the same time, childhood obesity has been continuously on the increase in past years, and has become a serious health concern in many western countries. While many people blame the increased number of indoor and sedentary activities (such as TV, computers and video games) for this, it was found that parental fear for the child’s safety while being outside has been a major catalyst to these problems.

Taking regular walks brings many benefits and it is a very good idea to start building the walking habit from an early age to ensure that kids incorporate daily exercise as part of their adult lives. As a rule of thumb, most kids can safely walk between 800-1000 metres per day, per year of age. Walking from fifteen to thirty minutes a day is a great routine for kids of school age.

Some benefits of walking regularly

  1. Helps to build muscles and maintain a healthy bone structure
  2. Helps children control their weight and prevents obesity problems
  3. Reduces levels of stress, sadness and anxiety (as all exercise does)
  4. Increases both flexibility and stamina
  5. Improves mental feats of concentration and memory retention
  6. Helps children sleep much better (as well as adults, to a certain degree)

Ambius Switches to Learn.com to Streamline Compliance Training and Host a Social Learning Environment for Global Colleagues

SUNRISE, FLORIDA January 27, 2010 – Learn.com®, the knowledge platform company, announced today that Ambius, the world’s largest provider of plants and ambient products, has switched to the company’s Learning Management System (LMS) from a competing product to manage employee development, certification training and a social learning environment for tracked collaboration.

Using Learn.com, Ambius will enhance their Career Advantage Program for colleagues focusing on horticultural and sales expertise, and implement the Sales Advantage Program that includes custom development plans for on-demand access to centralized training; and a social networking location for Team Members to share their experiences through blogs and forums. Utilizing these forums, Ambius hopes to capture the expertise of the top performers and use it to help those who are underperforming.

Learn.com will enable Ambius to synchronize with European partners who are currently utilizing 100% instructor lead training (ILT). Learn.com will convert a majority of the ILT curriculum into web based training, saving the company approximately $8,000 per course. The Ambius three year “Sales Advantage” strategy plan, forecasts a reduction in turnover which is currently at 30%, an increase the total number of worldwide sales professionals, and reduced costs while improving sales results by a minimum of $2 million using Learn.com.

“We switched to Learn.com because our previous vendor was not providing the support we needed to be successful and the product functionality was very limited. We selected Learn.com because they are more than just a tool to help our organization grow, they are situated to be a global business partner,” said Shannon Tipton, Learning and Development Manager, Worldwide Training for Ambius. “We believe that Learn.com will help us to reduce operational costs, such as plant replacements, and increase our top line sales revenue by providing a platform for standardized learning for our colleagues. We expect to reduce lost assets to 4.5% annually and increase the success rate of each sales person.”
