Chicago, November 30, 2009 (word count: 220)
SILIOS Technologies designs and manufactures micro-optics, diffractive optics, miniaturized spectrometers and optical instrumentation. New to its products is a mini-colorimeter for online control and analysis that use the visible spectrum. The company will be at Photonics West 2010 from January 23 to 28 on the French Pavilion, booth 1823.

The new mini-colorimeters are based on SILIOS’ DVF (discrete variable filter) technology for any application of analysis and control of online products using the visible spectrum. It is composed of a DVF mounted on a CMOS bar plus an electronic board for the control command and the recovery of data via a USB link.

The integration of these colorimeters is simplified by their small size (36 x 36 sq. mm) and their ease of connection (USB). They can be delivered with a library of DLL functions allowing easy application programming. A development kit including demonstration software is also available.

DVF technology allows the supply of very compact, efficient, low cost multi-spectral filters. DVF chips are composed of a set of cells, each of them filtering a narrow band of wavelengths. They are collectively made according to the production methods of microelectronics.

The application fields are numerous: color measurement, printing industry, LCD displays, environment (water, air, waste), photovoltaic cells and thermal solar panels, medical, agrifood and more.

Waste King helps customers save money

Waste King, the specialist collections, clearance and recycling company, is helping its commercial customers to save hundreds of pounds by getting them not just to say ‘no’ to using skips for all their waste materials but also by encouraging them to separate their waste materials before collection by Waste King’s uniformed and licensed operatives.

Waste King’s Andy Cattigan explained: “We have introduced a ‘fast load’ service for all our customers.

“Basically, we allow two hours to completely fill one of our trucks with waste materials – that’s equivalent to 16 yards of waste. If our staff can load the materials in less than half the allocated labour allowance – for example, loading half a truck (eight yards) in only 30 minutes or less instead of the one hour ‘allowed’, our Fast Load rate applies and so we charge the customer a reduced rate.

“In other words, if the customer has pre-sorted the waste materials into various types of waste before our truck and staff turn up, then it makes it easier for our staff to do their job – and they can do it quicker too. In that case, it’s only fair that our customers should reap the benefit of their helpful work, via a reduced charge for the job.”

A number of Waste King’s customers have already benefited from this arrangement – among them Barclays Bank, the health and fitness club chain LA Fitness, and the East London based interior design company, City Interiors.

“City Interiors’ staff have been exceptionally helpful in planning and organising the various waste loads for us before we arrive,” Cattigan said.

Organic Fertiliser For Deep Green Lawns And Healthy Plants For Domestic And Commercial Growers

An easy way to green up your lawn and vegetables before summer with 100% all natural, organic plant fertilizers.

The heat is Australia can take its toll on our green lawns and turn them to a brown colour. To eliminate this problem and before the sun has the time to destory your yard picking up some Swish Fish Fertiliser will ensure you have a beautifully green lawn all summer.

When you use Swish Fish Fertiliser for your lawn, your friends and neighbours will be asking questions. Jim Seamer from A.J Products Pty Ltd, distributer and supplier of Swish Fish Fertiliser says “We use all natural ingredients to stimulate the growth of your lawn and plants to keep your yard looking great”

Swish Fish Fertiliser is all natural and acts as an organic fertiliser and soil condition. With nothing added or taken away from the product, the fertiliser is made from the entire fish.

“Our product contains very high levels of fish oils which not only protect the plant from stress, such as heat but also help feed the soil biology, said Jim”

With such great results and the best part of the product is that extra chemicals to green the lawn or kill the weeds are not required. Swish Fish is safe for everyone including wildlife.

In a recent study the company recently applied its product to two lawns- a lawn that stayed green all summer long that received the product and one that did not, that browned quickly and got over run with weeds.

“Swish Fish Fertiliser is designed to provide extraordinary results in a very short space of time. It is perfect for both domestic gardners and commercial growers, says Seamer. However for best results it needs to be applied little and frequently throughout the growing season at 6 to 8 hectares, always best in the early morning or late at night.

Jorum Learning and Teaching Competition – Championing Open Educational Resources

The Jorum Learning and Teaching Competition (previously known as the Learning Object Competition) was again held in conjunction with the Association for Learning Technology (ALT) this year. This is the first time Jorum has hosted the competition, sponsored by Intrallect and previously run by Intrallect.

Louise Egan, Jorum Communications Officer, said, “The panel of judges were looking for exciting, innovative learning and teaching resources that were created under a Creative Commons licence. The Jorum team would like to thank all those who took the time to enter – the standard of entries received was outstanding, with many resources submitted from a diverse range of projects. We were delighted to see the talent that exists in the creation of learning and teaching resources. These are exactly the kind of materials that we want to encourage people to share with other users through the Jorum online service.”

Jorum is a JISC-funded online repository service for teaching and support staff in UK colleges and universities. It exists to encourage sharing, reuse and repurposing of learning and teaching materials created by the community for the community.

The shortlist of commended resources was presented in the main lecture theatre during ALT’s September conference and the top three entrants were awarded their prizes at the conference’s Gala Dinner.

First prize was awarded to ‘Making Group-work work’, developed by LearnHigher, a collaboration between the Universities of Brunel, Bradford and Leeds which involves 10 video episodes showing five students on the journey of a group project. This multimedia resource helps students and tutors overcome the challenges of group work and episodes are accompanied by audio clips and discussion points to help learners explore listening and interpersonal skills, oral presentations and group work. http://www.learnhighergroupwork.com/

Second prize went to a tutorial entitled Introducing English as a Lingua Franca an activity for students who are working in mixed language groups. The York St John University resource aims to help students raise their awareness of the use of English as a lingua franca and how they are using it in the classroom.

Delivering student workshops, a series of resources by the University of Leeds, Reading and CATS Consulting Ltd, on behalf of LearnHigher, won the third prize. This takes tutors through step-by-step processes of planning a workshop, including suggested icebreakers and specific interactive activities, all supplemented by handouts, PowerPoint presentations and lesson plans.

All resources entered into the competition will be available through JorumOpen, when released in January 2010. This new service will allow free access to learning and teaching resources using Creative Commons (CC) licences, for all to benefit worldwide.

For further information, visit: http://tinyurl.com/JorumComp, or the ALT Awards & Competitions page: http://www.alt.ac.uk/awards.html .

2. The finalists were asked to comment on why they make their resources available open access and the reasons they want to share using Jorum:

“It takes time and money to produce the resources – it would be a shame not to share them more widely” Colin Paton, Senior E-learning Project Manager (SCIE).

“Jorum, being the UK’s national digital repository for academic learning resources for FE & HE, means that submission to Jorum would probably be one of the best ways in increasing awareness and making our resources available for other people to use. This gains exposure for us and the university, and opens doors for possible collaboration with other universities” Mark Dransfield, e-Learning Adviser (York St John University).

“People go to Jorum to look for good quality resources” Carol Elston, e-Learning Adviser (LearnHigher).

Giunti Labs presents new ePortfolio, Skills and Competency Management solutions at Online Educa in Berlin

Standards, tools and techniques for competency and skills based learning content personalisation are beginning to emerge – which is just as well because they can help organisations perform better in the increasingly competitive global labour marketplace and world economy. This is the message that Giunti Labs, a leading global vendor of learning content management solutions (learn eXact LCMS) and digital repository platforms (HarvestRoad Hive), will outline at this year’s Online Educa conference and exhibition, being held in Berlin from 2nd to 4th December.

According to Giunti Labs’ CEO, Fabrizio Cardinali, who will give a presentation at the Online Educa conference, leading organisations are now reshaping their learning departments, re-tooling them towards systems and technologies that empower higher degrees of learning personalisation and customisation.

These systems and technologies are based on students’ and employees’ skills, competencies and portfolios as well as the delivery media available. Such systems and technologies make organisations better suited to empower their evolving workforces and their increasing re-skilling and performance support needs.

Cardinali’s presentation will explore the new learning content production and delivery strategy, definition and infrastructure for the Training Innovation Research and (job) Orientation (TRIO) project, Europe’s largest work-related e-learning regional initiative developed by Giunti Labs for Italy’s Tuscany Region.

TRIO offers a wide range of learning products for job related skills, with a catalogue of over 1,400 e-learning courses and, to date, some 542,000 such courses delivered to over 140,000 users since TRIO’s inception in 2002.

The TRIO project infrastructure, conceived by Giunti Labs, is based on an extended implementation of Moodle, including information services (KCMF), virtual classroom services (DimDim) and collaborative social networking services for sharing knowledge and experiences (Elgg). These are integrated with Giunti Labs’ HarvestRoad Hive, a federated digital repository System (FDRS) which unbundles, manages and delivers any form of content such as SCORM/AICC courseware, learning objects, digital assets, e-books and podcasts.

By adding the HarvestRoad Hive DR infrastructure to Moodle, TRIO managers can unbundle their content offering from any specific delivery platform – and offer the content repository to third party eGovernment initiatives and public authorities with no limit to the content strategy and delivery solution in place. TRIO is already integrated with several commonly used course management systems, authoring and content assembly tools – and the final catalogue has already been adopted by several local government administrations in Italy, Spain and beyond.

At the Online Educa conference, Giunti Labs will also launch its new ePortfolio and Skills Management System, eXact Portfolio. This web-based eskills and competency management software includes a full skills management application dealing with topics such as apprenticeship, validation scenarios and peer ratings.

The eXact Portfolio solution fully interacts with Giunti Labs’ flagship learn eXact LCMS solution to enable skills based content personalisation and repackaging.

Ola Badersten, Managing Director of Giunti Labs Scandinavia, where the eXact Portfolio module was designed, commented: “Current applications blending Giunti Labs’ new eXact Portfolio module with organisations’ enterprise learning content management systems address content personalisation needs in a large telecom company in Sweden; Fundeon, a knowledge centre providing education for the construction sector in Benelux, and a number of financial services institutions worldwide. Personalised learning, incorporating blended learning opportunities, has even reached the world of eGovernment and labour organisations.

“On a strategic level, eXact Portfolio is about identifying, charting and monitoring personal skills,” he added. “Ultimately, the vision is for each person to have one ePortfolio account which is used from that person’s first day in school until their retirement – and, perhaps, beyond. This ePortfolio might link with digital repositories of content to provide personalised learning content on demand, based on the user’s skills gaps, needs and objectives.”

At Online Educa Berlin, Giunti Labs will be at stand B61 at Foyer Potsdam, together with its international partners Stoas from Benelux and International Turnkey Systems (ITS) for the Emirates and Arabic-speaking countries.

As members of the European Learning Industry Group (ELIG), Giunti Labs will also attend ELIG’s workshop at the Online Educa conference, which is being held on 2nd December from 2pm to 6pm.

This workshop brings together key stakeholders to outline the next moves towards achieving a ‘learning society’. These key stakeholders include policy makers, corporate learning officers, learning industry experts and representatives from the education world.

Further details of this workshop can be accessed from the ELIG website (www.elig.org). Registration for the workshop will be free, on a first come first served basis.

South East Labels ensures rapid and reliable delivery for customers

With the ominous warnings of a three-day Royal Mail postal strike resulting in a backlog of at least 150 million letters and packets being issued by the union representing Britain’s striking postal workers, the pressure has been felt not only by Royal Mail management, but by businesses and individuals throughout the United Kingdom. Fortunately, with the third round of postal strikes being postponed until the New Year to allow for fresh talks and continued delivery during the festive season, this predicted figure hasn’t eventuated but the tension in the ongoing industrial dispute is still a sore point in Britain. Irrespective of the recent stalemate, many companies are anxious about how this instability has made contacting their customers somewhat of an uncertain business.

Office goods manufacturer and supplier South East Labels is no exception, however the company has decided to instigate its already scheduled change from hard copy to electronic media communication a little earlier. This development will entail the transmission of invoices and statements by e-mail correspondence and attachments, instead of the previous method of sending hard copy by post. The team at South East Labels has been making a name for itself over the past 20 years for the rapid delivery and reliable supply of labels, barcodes, and other office goods. The company deals in printed products as well as the means to produce such business solutions, such as digital printers, scanners, and verifiers, and aims to be a “one stop spot” for everything from an office label printer to security and asset tracking labels.

The recent Royal Mail strikes are part of an industrial dispute that has been ongoing since the summer, and is the first action involving postal workers since 2007. The reason behind the action is cited as Royal Mail’s refusal to enter into a dialogue with the Communication Workers Union as to the job security for postal workers in light of proposed modernisation plans. Royal Mail has been trying to compensate for a 10% drop in letter volume, although the strikes have threatened the postal system with a huge volume of backlog just before the Christmas rush. The proposed changes to the South East Labels invoicing system will have a further benefit for customers though, with the reduced overheads meaning that the company can afford to keep its prices continually low for all first-time and repeat customers.

Please note that South East Labels will be closed for the festive season from the afternoon of Tuesday 23rd December 2009, and will reopen on Monday 5th January 2010

Using Lean to drive the Patient Safety Agenda

Lean is far more than just a set of tools for improving efficiency. It can also drive significant improvements in patient safety, according to Amnis, the quality, innovation and productivity organisation.

“We have used Lean to drive improvements in medication risk, reduce the risk of falls and infection and also to reduce other risks arising from ‘human error’ type issues, such as wrong site surgery,” explained Amnis’ Mark Eaton.

Susan Williams, former Chief Executive of the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA), commented: “My work with the Amnis team has shown how easily Lean and other service improvement initiatives can be adapted to tackle some of the major process and cultural issues that drive poor patient safety performance.

“Using Lean to review systems and processes can deliver improvements not just in efficiency but also by engaging clinicians in reducing patient safety risks and, importantly, in avoiding introducing new risks into the redesigned ways of working.

“Organisations may be missing a trick in not explicitly aligning patient safety goals into their change programmes,” she added.

According to Amnis’ Eaton: “Lean has traditionally been used to drive improvements in productivity, experience and access in healthcare but as our work with organisations shows, with the right focus and access to specialist skills it is possible to tackle patient safety issues.

“The key to success is to ensure that you adopt an approach to Lean that is flexible for your organisation and to develop the internal capability of your staff as quickly as possible, so that they can take the reins for your improvement programme,” Eaton advised.

More than one million euros … with the metal detector

That’s a new case of incredible luck or perhaps of constancy and perseverance, who knows.
The lucky one is Scottish, David Booth, using a simple metal detector is able to find it 4 gold necklaces with also a particular historic value.
But not only!
The findings of the Scotsman involved of an inspection of the site and a sanctuary it was discovered that near Stirling, the place where the gold was found, there might be even.
Also November there was who has found only with the help of metal detectors a true treasure, gold, worth more than one million euros!
This is just the latest case of discovery of gold, because in the last two months seems there was an epidemic of gold diggers armed with metal detector, especially among the English who seem to be the luckiest.
September, an unemployed British, after found bangles and necklaces he have found gold, the most important archaeological treasures discovered in British territory.
October:  another Englishman, Anthony Pilson, there are a lot of gold on the banks of the Thames and then, incredibly, all donate to the Museum of London.

Waste King becomes a preferred supplier to the David Lloyd Leisure Group

The waste collections and recycling specialist, Waste King, has become a preferred supplier in the UK to eight of the David Lloyd Leisure Group (DLL) sites. DLL operates 78 clubs in the UK as well as a further ten sites across Europe.

Jo Farren, operations manager of David Lloyd Sudbury Hill, commented: “Waste King provides a swift, efficient and thorough service. The Waste King team are polite and helpful, with the work carried out within days of order.

“The whole service of collection – with manpower included – costs our business less than a standard skip. So it’s a win-win situation for us.”

Waste King’s Glenn Currie explained: “Waste King’s uniformed and licensed staff are working with DLL Group operations managers, such as Jo, to remove waste materials from DLL’s clubs.

“This means that there are no skips on DLL Group’s premises. Moreover, DLL staff don’t have to lift or move heavy waste items.

“Our staff do all of that for them – and we are able to separate the waste into loads that can be recycled in an environmentally friendly way,” he said. “If the waste had just been put into skips, the contents would have had to go to landfill projects whereas, now that Waste King staff can separate it into discrete types of waste, each of these types of waste can be re-cycled, thus placing less stress on our environment.”

This news comes hard on the heels of Waste King’s work to help the well known health and fitness club, LA Fitness, refurbish some of its gyms in the London area while keeping the disposal of the waste materials created in the process as environmentally friendly and as cost effective as possible. LA Fitness’ multi-million pound project involved Waste King in not only collecting and recycling materials from the LA Fitness gyms but also working with site managers at the gyms to develop Site Waste Management Plans (SWMP).

According to Waste King’s Glenn Currie: “SWMPs are intended to help contractors manage site waste more effectively, reducing potential harm to the environment and human health.

“They help to manage and reduce the amount of waste produced by construction projects, which means less waste goes to landfill. Other environmental benefits of SWMPs include less damage to the local environment, less fly-tipping, lower energy use and greater use of recycled materials.”

This means that LA Fitness can account for how every piece of waste from this project has been dealt with.
